Dichloromethane (DCM or methylene chloride) is an organic chloride with the molecular formula CH2Cl2. This colorless, volatile liquid has a sweet odor similar to chloroform and is widely used as a solvent. Although it is immiscible in water, it is polar and miscible with many organic solvents. Dichloromethane is a colorless, transparent, volatile liquid with an ether-like odor and sweet taste. It is nonflammable, but can form explosive mixtures with high concentrations of oxygen. Dichloromethane is slightly soluble in water and is most commonly used as an organic solvent. Dichloromethane readily dissolves in phenol-aldehydes, ketones, glacial acetic acid, phosphates, formaldehyde, cyclohexylamine, and acetoacetic acid.
