Differences between Waterborne Polyurethane Adhesives and Waterborne Polyvinyl Alcohol Adhesives
In the adhesive industry, both waterborne polyurethane adhesives and waterborne polyvinyl alcohol adhesives are common choices, but there are significant differences between them. These differences mainly lie in their composition, properties, and application areas.
I. Composition Differences
Waterborne polyurethane adhesives are mainly composed of waterborne polyurethane resin, solvents, and catalysts, with polyurethane resin being the key component responsible for providing the adhesive's adhesion and durability. Waterborne polyvinyl alcohol adhesives, on the other hand, are made primarily from vinyl alcohol, with the addition of thickeners, plasticizers, and other auxiliary components. This difference in composition leads to differences in their properties and applications.
II. Property Comparison
Adhesion and Durability: Due to the high molecular weight and strongly polar groups of its polyurethane resin, waterborne polyurethane adhesives exhibit excellent adhesion and durability, particularly excelling in oil resistance, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and low-temperature resistance. In comparison, waterborne polyvinyl alcohol adhesives have slightly inferior adhesion and durability, but can still meet application requirements under specific conditions.
Environmental friendliness and stability: Water-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) adhesives have gained attention for their environmentally friendly and non-toxic characteristics. They contain no harmful substances and are harmless to the human body. Furthermore, they maintain good stability under both high and low temperature conditions. While water-based polyurethane (PU) adhesives also possess some environmental friendliness, their stability may require additional attention in certain specific environments.
III. Application Areas
Due to the differences in the aforementioned characteristics and compositions, these two types of adhesives have different application focuses. Water-based polyurethane adhesives, due to their excellent adhesion and durability, are widely used in automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, and construction, performing particularly well in applications requiring high-strength, high-durability bonding. Water-based PVA adhesives, on the other hand, are more suitable for bonding materials such as packaging, paper, and wood, and are especially advantageous in scenarios with high environmental protection requirements.
