Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a high-performance, water-soluble polymer produced by the polymerization and alcoholysis of vinyl acetate. It typically appears as a white powder, flocculent, or flaky solid. It possesses excellent water solubility, film-forming properties, adhesiveness, emulsification stability, and biocompatibility. Non-toxic, non-irritating, and biodegradable, it is a key material spanning light industry, textiles, construction, medicine, and packaging, and is widely used in modern industry and daily life.


The core function of polyvinyl alcohol stems from its strong film-forming and adhesive properties. It can form a flexible, wear-resistant, and oil-resistant uniform film on surfaces, while exhibiting excellent adhesion to porous materials such as fibers, paper, wood, and ceramics. In the textile industry, polyvinyl alcohol is the most widely used warp sizing agent. It forms a strong protective film on the yarn surface, increasing yarn strength, reducing breakage, and making weaving smoother. Desizing is simple and environmentally friendly. It can also be used as a fabric finishing agent, improving fabric feel and crispness, making it an important auxiliary material in the production of high-quality fabrics.


In the paper industry, it is often used as a surface sizing agent and coating adhesive. Adding it significantly improves the surface strength, smoothness, and water resistance of paper, making printing clearer and less prone to dusting. It also enhances the internal bonding force between paper and paperboard, improving the durability of paper products. It is widely used in the production of high-grade printing paper, packaging paper, and specialty paper.


In the adhesive field, polyvinyl alcohol is the core raw material for water-based adhesives. White glue, wood glue, paper glue, label glue, etc., are all based on it. It provides strong adhesion, is water-based and environmentally friendly, and dries quickly, making it suitable for bonding materials such as wood, paper, and fabrics. It is widely used in home decoration, furniture, packaging, and handicrafts.


In the construction and building materials field, it is an important additive in mortar, putty, and tile adhesive. It can improve the bonding strength, flexibility, and crack resistance of materials, reduce hollowness and cracking, enhance water resistance, and make walls smoother and more durable; it is also used in architectural coatings to improve coating adhesion and washability.


In the pharmaceutical and daily chemical industries, polyvinyl alcohol has good biocompatibility and is safe and non-toxic. It is commonly used as a component of eye drops (artificial tears) to relieve dry eyes and eye fatigue; it is also used in tablet coatings, pharmaceutical dressings, mask base fabrics, and hair care products, playing a role in film formation, moisturizing, and sustained release.


In the packaging and new materials fields, it is a major raw material for environmentally friendly water-soluble films. It can be used to make water-soluble packaging for pesticides and detergents, which dissolves instantly in water, requires no unpacking, and is safe and pollution-free; it can also be used to produce PVB safety glass interlayer film and biodegradable packaging materials, aligning with the trend of green and low-carbon development.


Furthermore, polyvinyl alcohol also plays a role in agriculture, printing, metallurgy, and 3D printing industries, such as soil improvement, ink additives, and metal forming lubricants. With its multifunctionality and environmentally friendly properties, it has been upgraded from a traditional chemical raw material to a high-performance new material, and its application continues to expand in high-end manufacturing, biomedicine, green packaging and other fields, becoming an important polymer material supporting industrial upgrading.
