1. Foreign media reported that on May 19, 2018, a gas leak occurred at a chemical plant in Houston, Texas, USA, which subsequently caused an explosion. The fire was intense, and the incident injured at least 22 people. Authorities stated that there was no chemical leak, and most of the injured suffered heatstroke. The cause of the incident is under investigation. The chemical plant, belonging to Kuraray America, is located about 40 kilometers southeast of Houston and is responsible for producing polymers and chemicals. It is currently the world's largest polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) plant, with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons, primarily supplying the US domestic market.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the plant was expected to be closed for several days while the damage from the accident was assessed.
2. Event Commentary: Significant Decline in US Polyvinyl Alcohol Supply Benefits Domestic Polyvinyl Alcohol Exports
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), also known as PVOH, is widely used in films, adhesives, paper treatment agents, coatings, textile sizing agents, chemical fibers, emulsifiers, dispersants, medical materials, and building and automotive modifiers. Its applications span printing, food, pharmaceuticals, papermaking, textiles, construction, wood processing, agriculture, and metallurgy. Global consumption growth remains at 4%–5%.
As of the end of 2017, the global effective polyvinyl alcohol production capacity was 1.88 million tons (with no significant new capacity added in recent years), with the US accounting for approximately 9%–10%. The force majeure event at Kuraray's US plant will affect nearly one-third of the US domestic production capacity, directly leading to a significant and prolonged decline in US domestic polyvinyl alcohol supply. Future demand will necessitate substantial imports to meet US domestic market consumption.
This event will stimulate domestic demand for polyvinyl alcohol exports. China is currently the world's largest producer of polyvinyl alcohol, with an effective production capacity accounting for more than half of the global total, providing a strong foundation for product exports. In 2017, my country's net exports of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) reached 92,000 tons (with a compound annual growth rate of 15% from 2012 to 2017). It is expected that the expansion of export demand will significantly boost domestic PVA prices in the future.
