Typical Case of Tile Detachment - Tile Adhesive Using Polyvinyl Alcohol as A Binder

ANHUI LIWEI CHEMICAL CO.,LIMITED

This case occurred in Weifang, Shandong!

A tile adhesive manufacturer used polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an adhesive. Construction was completed in November 2016, and the tiles became hollow and detached in April 2017. The PVA dosage was 5 kg/ton.

PVA powder is not water-resistant, and its use in tile adhesive has disastrous consequences! Simultaneously, inferior latex powder or PVA powder was used in the grout, without the addition of water-repellent agents and other relevant additives. Moisture seeped into the tile gaps, causing the tiles to become hollow and detach.

Never use PVA powder or PVA construction adhesives (such as 107, 801, etc.) as tile adhesives.

The article "The Necessity of Phasing Out 107 Construction Adhesive" points out that even qualified 107 adhesive fails to meet the standards for ceramic wall and floor tiles and concrete interface treatment agents. If even qualified 107 adhesive fails to meet the requirements, what about substandard ones?

ANHUI LIWEI CHEMICAL tells you a little trick to check the quality of tile adhesive: if the crack is on the substrate, the tile adhesive is of good quality; if the crack is on the tile, the tile adhesive is of poor quality!
