1. What Is EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) Copolymer?

EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) copolymer is a general term for polymers formed by copolymerizing ethylene and vinyl acetate. It is a high-performance, eco-friendly fine chemical product with excellent comprehensive properties, widely applied in building materials, textile printing and dyeing, papermaking, coatings, adhesives, labeling and sealing industries. Among all EVA derivatives, VAE emulsion is the water-soluble emulsion subtype with high vinyl acetate content, which dominates most aqueous industrial applications.

EVA series products are synthesized via emulsion polymerization with ethylene and vinyl acetate as core raw materials and matched auxiliary materials. All EVA-based materials feature outstanding environmental friendliness and stable adhesive performance, making them versatile for diverse industrial scenarios.

2. EVA Product Classification (By Vinyl Acetate Content)

The performance and form of EVA copolymers depend entirely on vinyl acetate (VA) content. The industry classifies EVA into three mainstream categories, among which the high-VA aqueous type is defined as VAE emulsion:

  • EVA Resin: Vinyl acetate content below 40%, featuring high flexibility and toughness.
  • EVM (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Elastomer): Vinyl acetate content ranging from 40% to 70%, presenting excellent elasticity.
  • VAE Emulsion: Vinyl acetate content between 70% and 95%, appearing as a milky white liquid in appearance.
  • To clarify the industrial naming convention: EVA is the general parent category, while VAE is a specific high-content emulsion branch of the EVA family. In most industrial scenarios, the commonly mentioned "EVA emulsion" specifically refers to the VAE emulsion with 70%–95% VA content, which is the most widely used form of EVA in coating, adhesive and papermaking fields.

3. Core Industrial Applications of EVA Emulsion (VAE Emulsion)

3.1 Adhesive Base Material

EVA emulsion is a premier base material for various adhesives with universal bonding capabilities. It can firmly bond conventional materials such as wood, leather, fabrics, paper, cement, concrete, aluminum foil, and galvanized steel sheets. Additionally, it exhibits unique adhesion for hard-to-bondable materials, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), PVC, and polyester films.

It is also widely formulated into pressure-sensitive adhesives and heat-seal adhesives. A typical commercial product is L4 special carton adhesive, which relies on EVA emulsion’s strong adhesion to ensure stable and durable bonding of cartons during production and daily use.

3.2 Environmentally Friendly Coatings & Latex Paints

EVA emulsion is a core base material for latex paints. Latex paints formulated with polyvinyl acetate emulsion, acrylic emulsion, styrene-butadiene emulsion, and EVA emulsion are widely recognized for their safety and environmental performance.

EVA latex paints are suitable for interior and exterior wall finishing, roof waterproofing, fireproof coating and anti-rust coating projects. The cured EVA paint film resists blistering, aging and cracking effectively. With strong adhesion to various substrates, non-toxic formula and easy construction, EVA emulsion serves as a premium and safe building coating base material.

3.3 Paper Processing Industry

In papermaking, EVA emulsion is mainly used for paper impregnation, surface coating, and pulp addition. It can polish various paper products, effectively improving their dry and wet strength, toughness, and glossiness. It also enhances color stability, reduces ink consumption during printing, and upgrades the overall grade of paper products.

As a pulp additive, it can be used to produce various non-asbestos gaskets. Moreover, it is suitable for special paper processing, including dry-process expanded paper for disposable napkins, facial tissues, diapers, and sanitary towels.

3.4 Modified Building Cement Materials

Ordinary cement products have inherent defects including easy cracking, poor water resistance, impact resistance and acid resistance, limiting their service life and application effect. As an efficient cement modifier, EVA emulsion can significantly optimize cement performance.

After adding EVA emulsion, cement products gain enhanced flexibility, water resistance, impact resistance and acid resistance. It optimizes the internal texture of cement, improves overall durability and practicality, and makes cement materials more adaptable to complex construction engineering scenarios.

3.5 Packaging & Food Contact Auxiliary Materials

Thanks to its excellent transparency, weather resistance and safety, EVA emulsion is widely used in packaging manufacturing. It can produce protective packaging films and bags that isolate commodities from external environmental damage.

It is also applied to the production of cake bottom box packaging materials. Its high transparency fully displays the appearance of cakes, greatly improving product attractiveness and meeting food-grade packaging safety standards.

3.6 Footwear & Daily Consumer Goods

EVA emulsion is a core material for manufacturing shoe midsoles and outsoles. Its lightweight, soft and shock-absorbing properties make it an ideal raw material for high-performance sports shoes and casual shoes, effectively improving wearing comfort and product durability.

In daily household products, it is used to produce floor mats, children’s toys and other supplies. Its excellent safety, soft touch and stability have won wide market recognition.

3.7 New Energy & Industrial Accessories

In the new energy industry, EVA emulsion acts as a key backing material for solar panels. It features reliable electrical insulation and superior weather resistance, which can effectively protect internal battery components and extend the service life of photovoltaic modules.

3.8 Medical & Sports Equipment

With good biocompatibility and low toxicity, EVA emulsion meets medical-grade application standards. It is commonly used in the production of medical adhesive tapes and medical packaging materials, ensuring safe and hygienic medical use.

For sports equipment manufacturing, EVA emulsion is widely applied to produce sports protective gear, swimming floating boards and fitness accessories. Its lightweight texture and excellent cushioning performance can effectively buffer impact forces and protect user safety.
