What is The Difference Between Polyvinyl Alcohol and Polyethylene?

I. Chemical Structure

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene (PE) differ significantly in their chemical structures. PVA contains numerous hydroxyl (-OH) groups, while PE contains only one methyl (-CH3) group. This substantial difference leads to significant differences in their properties and applications.


II. Differences in Properties

Solubility: PVA and PE also differ greatly in solubility. PVA has excellent solubility, dissolving in water and some other organic solvents. PE, on the other hand, is a water-insoluble polymer, dissolving only in certain organic solvents.


Thermal Stability: PVA decomposes easily at high temperatures, making it unsuitable for high-temperature applications. PE, however, exhibits excellent thermal stability and can be used at high temperatures.


Physical Properties: PVA is more flexible and bendable than PE. PVA also possesses higher tensile strength and abrasion resistance, making it suitable for manufacturing high-strength products.


III. Differences in Applications PVA and PE also have significantly different applications. PE is primarily used to manufacture everyday items such as plastic bags, bottles, and pipes, and can also be used in the manufacture of some industrial products. Polyvinyl alcohol is mainly used to manufacture chemical products such as fibers, paper, coatings, and adhesives, and can also be used to manufacture pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
